China's continental coastline extends for about 18,000 kilometres, and its vast sea surface is studded with more than 5,000 islands. The topography varies tremendously and includes the world's highest peak, the 8,848 metre Mount Qomolangma (Mount Everest) on the China-Nepal border, and one of the world's lowest basins, the Turpan Basin, 154 metres below sea level, in Xinjiang.
